Hundreds of London’s homeless population enjoyed free fish and chips when Soho-based chippy Golden Union ran its third annual Eat At The Table (EATT) event.
Held in conjunction with homeless charity Centrepoint, the fish and chip shop opened its doors, not only offering a hot plate of food but also a warm environment in which to eat.
Golden Union, which opened in 2008, describes itself as an authentic-feeling British chippy with a modern twist. Since the beginning, it has worked hard to give customers great quality, homemade food with fast and friendly service, and co-owner Kerry doesn’t see any reason why the homeless population of London should be any different.
“EATT was one of our most popular events last year, and one that really made a difference to the community around us,” she comments. “We’re so pleased to be able to give the homeless a chance to dine at the table again, especially during this cold winter.”
This year the event attracted celebrities such as singer Rachel Stevens, celebrity chef Aldo Zilli, Downton Abbey actor Allen Leech and actress The Real Hustle’s Jessica-Jane Clement, who all took a turn behind the range and serving the young people themselves.
More than 80,000 young people experienced homelessness in 2011, a rise of 15%.
