McDonald's famous golden arches have won it the title of most memorable logo in the food and drink industry, according to an online survey by Small Business Logos.
The poll, which featured on Startups.co.uk, asked business owners which well-known logos they found the most unforgettable. Logos were organised into a range of industry sectors such as technology, retail, communication, food and drink, and travel and leisure with Apple, BBC, Nike and London Underground all among the winners.
The aim of the research is to help new businesses understand why well-known logos communicate a brand story and also to uncover trends and tips that can be adopted when creating a company logo and building a brand.
Lucy Smith, marketing and e-commerce director for Small Business Logos, says: “Logos are a crucial part of a business’s identity, and, as our winners prove, over time they become important entities in their own right, instantly conjuring up the values and key messages of a particular brand.”
Recommending businesses use the clues provided by the UK’s market leaders, Lucy adds: “Simplicity and the ability to reproduce in a range of different sizes, media and on products, is key. Think about how colour, symbols and shapes might represent what you do or the sector you operate in – Apple’s silver is widely associated with technology.
"If you have a growth plan factor this in to your thinking when briefing the initial logo; consider how versatile it is if your business develops? And if I can give you one piece of advice, keep it simple.”
