Ramsgate chippy is named champion

Peter’s Fish Factories on Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, Kent, has the ‘Best Chippy Chips’ in the UK, as voted for by the public in the Choice Chip Awards for Chip Week.

The Ramsgate-based shop was frying high after being awarded the prestigious title in a competition to celebrate Chip Week 2012, which runs until Sunday 26th February and recognises and rewards the quality chips being served by shops in nine different regions.

Chip fans voted in their thousands in the Choice Chip Awards, with over 400 chip shops across the country involved and 35,000 votes received at chips.lovepotatoes.co.uk and through voting cards in shops.

Peter’s Fish Factories topped the league table for friers in the South East region and such was their popularity, they wrapped up the prestigious ‘National Champions’ title too.

Peter and the team were over the moon with the award. Peter said: “It’s unbelievable and I can’t thank our customers enough for voting for us. It really makes me proud to say we’ve got the best chippy chips in the UK!”

The other eight shops to win their region are:

Scotland:  Moores Chip Shop, Castle Douglas

Wales:  Trecenydd Fish Bar, Caerphilly

North East:  Smith Chippy, South Shields

North West: Holly Tree Fish & Chips, Blackburn

The Midlands: Chamberlains, Oldbury

East of England: The Burton Road Fish & Chips Takeaway & Restaurant, Lincoln

South West: Krispies, Devon

London: Fish Bone, Cleveland Street

Kate Cox, Chip Week campaign manager for Potato Council, said: “Chip Week is a celebration of the Nation’s love of chips and as we suspected people are very passionate about their chips, hence why the Choice Chip Awards have been so incredibly popular, with over 35,000 eager chip lovers voting to put their favourite chip shop on the map.

“This has been a great start to Chip Week 2012, which will see celebrations taking place in shops, pubs, restaurants and retailers across the country. I’m sure that their customers will continue to support them during Chip Week."
