50 Best Fish & Chip Shops 2015 unveiled

The 50 Best Fish & Chip Shops for 2015 have been revealed with an impressive four shops achieving 100% – the highest proportion of shops achieving top marks since the competition started three years ago.

Just under 500 shops entered our 50 Best Fish & Chip Shops 2015 with each one subject to a mystery dining visit by an independent company. Over 40 aspects of the business were assessed including the quality of fish and chips, staff presentation, front-of-house hygiene and customer service.

Once again the benchmark was set extremely high with every shop on the list scoring 95% or over in their mystery dine. Of those takeaways to make the prestigious 50 Best, 32 were brand new entrants while eight shops have managed to retain their places on the list for the past three years now – Aragon Fisheries, Battersea Fish Bar, Colmans, Fairfield Plaice, Hill Top Village Fisheries, Simpsons Fish & Chips, and The Elite Fish & Chip Company with its Lincoln and Sleaford takeaways.

Mirroring the picture last year, a majority of those shops that made the 50 Best were located in England (47), with five in Scotland, one in Wales and two in Northern Ireland.

All shops that entered the competition will receive a copy of their mystery dining sheet, providing valuable feedback, while the 50 Best also receive a certificate and an A2 window poster to display in their shops promoting their achievement.

Reece Head, competition organiser, comments: “It’s fantastic to see four shops achieve 100% as it’s a tough set of criteria that our judges mark to, and it’s a real testament to the procedures, practices and staff in place at those outlets.

“But equally it’s just as satisfying to see shops hanging on to their title as well as newcomers coming through too. Take a shop like Three Cottages which entered in 2013 but didn’t make the 50 Best. Last year it did, and this year it has gone on to improve its score further still, which demonstrates how this competition has become a useful business tool.”

With a number of shops tying on 95% this year,  the list for 2015 actually includes 54 shops instead of the usual 50. Reece comments: “There was nothing in it between those shops that scored 95% so the only fair thing to do was to put them all through – and they all deserve their place in our 50 Best.”

Reece adds: “We’ve had fantastic support from the industry and have taken on several news sponsors this year that can see the value this competition brings in raising standards across the fish and chip shop sector. I would like to thank Pukka Pies, Frymax, Norwegian Seafood Council, Goldensheaf, Bornholms, Middleton Foods and KFE who have been vital in growing this much-valued competition.”

Shops are now being encouraged to take to Twitter (#50Best) and Facebook to spread the news as well as contact their local media and revel in the publicity that their win brings!
