Statement from the National Federation of Fish Friers

17 November 2008

Having read the two articles in your recent publication I feel we need to put the record straight.

The N.F.F.F is not closing neither is it going bust. The Federation holds considerable assets which can be used if needed. The quote from Mr. D. Tomlinson, ex Vice President, should not have been made as he was talking about part of a financial control package designed to ascertain the running costs of the Federation, a measure that any business should undertake.

With regards to the current management of the Federation as depicted by Mr Hillan, the situation is that nominations have been sought for the positions of President, Vice President and Treasurer. The closing date for nominations was 31st October 2008. If there has been more than one nomination for any position then a by-election will be held. It is hoped this process will be completed by mid November after which time the management team will be in place.

It is true that there has been some disruption in recent months due to the lack of leadership. Mr Hillan was approached in June to join the Executive Council in recognition of his proven ability and the work he has done working with his Local Training Authority. He accepted the invitation and has been co-opted onto the board. As far as I am concerned he still retains that position so I do not understand the confusion. As to being told his services were not required, in a slightly more vulgar way, it most certainly did not come from myself and my enquiries have failed to establish any culprit.

We must as, a matter of urgency, start moving the Federation forward. Our reputation has been tarnished by recent events and statements made by past Board members. Our standing within the industry remains good and we enjoy the support of the major partners in the trade ie Seafish, Potato Council, Drywite and other major suppliers. With their help and a good management team we can and will make the necessary changes to bring the Federation up to date and put the focus of our efforts back onto helping and looking after the interests of our members.

Can I finally thank the management of Fry magazine for giving us the opportunity to reply.
